Hello my fellow NH'ers,
my nipple waterer has worked very well this winter even through the cold nights, saves me a TON of time and keeps the ladies and gentlemen healthier than a bowl waterer. Its also cheaper to keep the water warmer thanks to the insulation all around. I encourage some of you to try my design if you are so willing and see if you like it. the link is in the signature portion below this post and also here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/summer-winter-chicken-nipple-waterer
thanks and happy chickening!

That's awesome!! Great idea. So, the nipples don't freeze up on you?

If u read the write up I had put in some updates, but to answer your question it got down to -6 outside and about 0 degrees in the coop and that's when it froze, no damage just the metal tips they get water from froze for less than a day, so I put out a couple bowls of water but as soon as it warmed up they unfroze because the water in the pipe never stopped flowing even when the tips froze, if u look at the diagram I made in the writeup you will understand what I meant by the last sentence. Yesterday it was 10 degrees out and they didn't freeze, the key is the constant warm water flow. I add iodine to the cooler to keep the water clean, its good for the chickens and the military has used iodine for water purification for many decades, so it works really well, no slimey residue inside! Im really happy with it and think its worth the time to build

I BET THE WIFE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A SETUP LIKE THAT. VERY NICE.

its not that expensive for the materials but soo worth it in my opinion. im curios to see how it does through the rest of the winter. im thinking of making them in spring for some people

We have a nipple waterer and love it! I purchased my bucket locally and purchased the heater lid from www.cheerychicks.com. It's amazing! Our nipples don't freeze as long as the de-icer rests on the bottom of the bucket. The de-icer is obviously safe for plastics and automatically turns on and off based on temperature.

Is your bucket insulated? If not you should insulate, I used foam then wrapped in duct tape so the chickens wouldn't eat the foam

So we all just went through a cold snap, the coldest it got in my coop was about 0F which is almost 10 below zero outside. the insulated barn (not heated) and 24 warm little bodies makes a difference. I was just wondering if everyone's flocks did ok during that cold snap. i hope all did well.
