New Hens Laying!

These new hens from this spring just started laying!
It's surprising usually young chickens start laying after winter. They started before! Fastermatruing breeds I guess. Deleware, Astrolorp, Dominque.

But now we have a sudden surplus of eggs! Small but many!

It's actually quite common for early spring pullets to lay through their first winter. That is why folks rotate out some older hens to bring in new pullets each spring for a winter egg supply.

This has always been my plan...but I'm not so good about the rotating out part. :gig
 
And one of my older Buff Orpington hens started laying again too! I guess she was inspired by the young one. Because normally she stops laying a month ago due to the change in daylight. Along with the other old hens.
