Although I am experienced with and have many other pets, chickens are new to my wife and I. My name is Rikki (also a girl if that matters lol)

We've been doing our research and setting up what we believe is a great environment for them in the back yard. Thought it would be good to get my foot in here to get some first hand advice as well.

We have 3 barred rocks we got from a farm a few towns over. We wanted to get slightly older hens (they were supposedly 3 to 4 weeks) and had believed we might have a better chance with them all being girls, but I'm a bit afraid they might ALL be roosters. One was very obvious and we had to trade him for a new one because it is against city code to have them. Now I have two 5-7 week olds and one 4 week old.

Probably post pics of them in the gender question thread to hopefully get some good news. We don't want to have to keep trading chicks and have any with huge age gaps between them to avoid bullying.

ANYWAYS, happy to be here :)

Hi, Rikki, welcome to BYC.

How old do females usually start getting combs? I was hoping 6 to 7 weeks lol

Female chicks are born with combs - small, but they are there. Significant development varies from breed to breed, but generally happens as they approach point of lay - ie later than 6 or 7 weeks.
