Hello, Excited to be a part of this forum. I went outside today to collect eggs, and I noticed there was blood smeared on one of the eggs. I looked over my hens. One of my hens was bleeding and had clear and milky discharge coming from her vent. She is bleeding slightly. Her vent is inflamed and red. Has anyone experienced this? What did you do? Any idea what it is? Will she be ok? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just worried about her. Thank you.

Yesterday I actually got a bloody egg, which isn't rare, but not a common thing either.

Was the egg rather large for her? That can sometimes happen, like in my case it was a rather large egg for my little silkie.

If you aren't already putting oyster shell in a separate dish, I would get some and provide that for your hens. If you already do that, I'd give her a Tums or a human Calcium +D, whole. Just pull down her wattles gently and she'll open up. That'll cause contractions in case she's got a broken egg inside her yet. You can do this daily for three days and hopefully by then she'll be looking much better.

As for the milky discharge, does it have a bad odor? It could be vent gleet. For that, you can get some generic Monostat cream, as long as it's got miconazole nitrate in it. I'd bathe her butt end, then dry and put the cream on her vent area. If you squeeze out about 1/2" of it, you can give her that orally too. This would be done 2-3 times a day and in around three days should be gone.

Giving something probiotic a couple times a week usually keeps vent gleet from occurring. There's powders for water which is the easiest way.

I've had eggs laid with blood streaks from a burst vessel but not in combination with an inflamed vent with discharge. I think the inflammation is what caused the burst vessel in your girl.

As @Debbie292d suggested, it would be a good idea to start treating her for vent gleet. She may benefit from an Epsom salt flush first. Follow the instructions on how to do that here. I would then get the combo pack of monistat or miconazole generic that has the suppositories and the cream. Put the cream on her vent and give her 1/2 suppository daily for 10 days. Clean her daily as needed to get the gunk off as it is a skin irritant.

After all the treatment is over, her gut will need a rebalance. Start her on a good chicken probiotic in her water or mix it into a mash feed for her. You can also use a bit of Kefir in her mash daily.
