Glad to know I'm not (totally) abnormal.

I'm as sure as I could possibly be right now on the lt. brahma being a roo. I gave him a very close examination next to one of the others this morning, and the difference is very distinct.

Any thoughts on the other two being roos? How old are they generally before you know for sure what you've got? Sounds like chances aren't too good that our RIR is a roo, so much for my dream of a RED rooster. Ah well.

Thanks so much for the responses. What a great forum!

Welcome Slowhorse! Love the pictures, and love the horse! He's beautiful! My ride is half thoroubred. Bet you can guess what the other half is! I'm a week and a half into my first chicks, so there are a lot of us newbies out here, and a lot of the chicken and equine folks too. Glad you're here!

You'd be having an easier time, if you had all one breed to compare. Different breeds have such different body and comb sizes. A hen of one breed can have a bigger body, comb and wattles than a rooster in another breed.

Although, there can be a big difference in development, even with the same breed and sex. I have all Faverolles chicks at the moment. Even though they're only 2 weeks old, I know they're all pullets, because of the color of their wing feathers. They are all different sizes, with one being huge! She is like an amazon! You should see the legs on that girl and feisty, too!

One of mine is always a bit behind the medium sized chicks in development.

All my other chicks came from MM and they had a 100% accuracy rate on sexing my pullets. So, I have very little experience in the rooster guessing game!

I don't know if these will help, but here are a couple of pages:

Here is a link to Feathersite.com's chick identification page. It has links to the main breed pages, but they go to the chick pictures at the bottom of those pages. If you scroll up on those pages, you'll see the pictures of the adults:

Here are some tips on sexing older chicks:

Good luck!
