Hello. My name is Daniel, and I live in South Louisiana. I am a primary school art teacher, artist, musician, and now chicken owner. I am new to keeping chickens. My youngest daughter(8), showed an interest in raising chickens, so here we are. We ordered 6 silkies and a variety of 9 egg layers from a hatchery, and received them yesterday. Unfortunately we lost a few silkies, and one of the others last night. She shed a few tears, but took it fairly well.
I am eager to learn all I can.

Greetings and welcome to BYC Daniel! So glad you joined us. Sorry that your first order had a few losses. That's always tough. But it's good that your daughter get's introduced to the fact that with life, there's also death. You might consider calling any local farm store or even some hardware stores like Ace, as they generally carry chicks this time of year. You might be able to replace those that you lost.

There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this thread. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. A couple with may be of interest to you at this stage are:
Topic/Question of the week - Brooding and supplementing heat for chicks
Topic of the Week - Raising Chicks

You might be interested in downloading this free e-book My First Year With Chickens

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your little ones, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
