We had chickens in the 50’s when I was a child. I kept them in the 70’s after I got married. Forgot how nasty they could be with lice and worms in the eggs. My son took over our contract hog barns after I had a stroke so I am wanting some chickens again and a few ducks because I have always had some livestock. When I was a kid mom and dad had a hexagon, or maybe octagon steel brooder house. I’m sure it came in a kit. I remember having long windows in each panel of the octagon or hexagon, a door and of course a steel brooder in the middle also hex or octagon, with little gold up doors around the perimeter. When down they had a small arch opening. Does anyone know if something similar is made today. It was probably 12 feet in diameter. I’m probably getting too nostalgic in my old age. I’ll do chickens again but no milk cow haha. I do raise a big garden. Thank you

Greetings and welcome to BYC! Sorry to hear about your stroke. I'm assuming that you've recovered enough to function (you're getting chickens). So glad you joined us. I can't ever recall finding or hearing of worms inside an egg? :eek:Seriously? I think I'd stop eating eggs! :th:sick Lice and mites are bad, but easily dealt with...

There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. I've never seen a brooder like you've described... Maybe you could search the internet for a picture? By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Hello Glad you joined us here at Backyard Chickens

G’Day from down under JRodangus :frow Welcome!

Sorry that I am not able to assist with your 'steel brooder house' question.

However, I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
