Hello, chicken peeps! To make it easier for both you and myself, I decided to follow the template.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Brand new chicken owner, got my first ones about a month ago when they wandered into the neighbor's yard right at dusk. We're guessing someone dropped them here since they were very lost when we found them, and none of the neighbors knew where they came from.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
4
that happened fast!
(3) What breeds do you have?
One of our OG girls didn't make it - she was very sick when we found her, and just as she started making a comeback, she turned a corner and declined very quickly. It wrecked me when she passed. We don't know for sure what she was - I thought maybe a buff Orpington or a Rhode island red, or a mix of both. Her best friend is the other OG, and we can't figure out what she is for sure. I think she may either be an ayam ceyani/some Easter egger mix, or possibly a black marans. She looks a lot like the pictures I've seen of black copper pullets, and she's maybe 8 or 9 weeks old now, so it's possible. I guess we'll see what kind of eggs she lays and maybe that'll give us a hint.
The new friends we got for Hazel (remaining OG) are also kind of surprises. I ordered 3 other pullets - 1 was a green queen Easter egger bantam, and 2 were "ultra rare surprise" pullets. Our bantam EE ended up being a blue frizzle (my spirit animal). One surprise was a white crested black polish, and the other I'm still slightly unsure of, but I really think she's a silver cuckoo marans. Either that, or she is also some kind of EE. Again, we'll have to see what color eggs she lays in order to know for sure.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Leaning that they all have different personalities. I had absolutely no idea I could have such a major bond with a chicken, of all things. The only reason we have 4 chickens is because I was terrified of losing Hazel to depression once her friend died, so we obviously had to get her friends.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Painting, drawing, crafting, crocheting, etc...
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My chicken, Hazel, is hands-down my favorite pet. Other than her aforementioned friends, we have 3 cats, 2 of which are total jerks.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've only known about it since I suddenly had chickens and didn't know anything about anything. This forum has been an amazing resource in navigating our chicken journey.
