I thinks it's better to get them locally if you can, but we aren't able to find what we were looking for. We wanted a certain variety at the same age. They shipped well and were active when they arrived.
Welcome to BYC from California wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills.
Freshly hatched chicks do not need to eat or drink for three days, so they tolerate shipping pretty well if they are kept warm - but not too hot or too cold. Many hatcheries send "packing peanut" cockerel chicks with your order so they have body heat to sustain them. Free chicks - but almost always exclusively males. MyPetChicken (usually referred to as "MPC") does not send extras, but will include a warming pack for a fee.
It's late in the season to find chicks at feed stores.... Spring and early Summer are the prime "chick seasons" for feed stores.
I also like Ideal Poultry - I've purchased chicks and goslings from Ideal, ducklings from Metzer Farms, the "rainbow layer combination" from MPC, and slews of chicks from a local feed store over the years.
Good luck in finding what you want for your future flock!
