Hello from Washington State! I'm Rick, and my wife and I just purchased a wonderful old farmhouse. We had planned on having chickens for the eggs and restarting with my honeybees again at some point. We had not really discussed having a cat... We already have a dog so as we move in there are going to be some adjustments needing to be made for us all!

We got a jump start of sorts with regard to our desire to have chickens. We agreed with the previous owner to take on the chickens and a farm cat she could not take with her. The chickens are about 10 years old and do not seem to produce but one or two eggs a day on the good days, sometimes we are not rewarded with eggs. we are always rewarded with the chickens joyful noises and antics. It is our plan to let them all live out their lives. We will enjoy eating whatever eggs the girls might gift us, but we will not be eating the chickens.

There are 8 hens and one rooster. I cannot tell you the breeds at the moment and might not be able to until I can do some research. there are two coops and a huge fenced and cross fenced chicken yard with ample covered areas for rainy Pacific NW days.

We are still in the process of moving in but I have been doing work on the home getting things ready and taking care of the chickens and cat as best as I can. I have questions, but will post them elsewhere as I do understand this area is for introductions.

I'm looking forward to reading, learning and sharing with you all as I find the time to visit.

Hi Rick, it's nice to have you here! Enjoy your new home, the flock and the farm cat...sounds like lots of new adventures are in store!

Thank you for giving the retired hens a chance to live out their final years. The owner must have given them excellent care to reach that age. So glad you joined us at Backyard chickens :wee

Thank you all for the warm greetings!

I would write more and share more, but I seem to be falling asleep at the computer. I did want to say thanks before nodding off...
