Hi y'all :) I'm a SAHM to a sassy 5.5yo daughter, who *finally* got chickens (we said she could get them when me moved, which was 3 months ago--an eternity to a kid!) today. We picked out 8 ISA Browns at the local farm store, and DD sat by the brooder for a good 7 hours today, talking to the chicks and holding them. It was darling. Hopefully, she still finds them fascinating when she has to clean the bedding, right?

I'm completely new to chickens (I'm actually scared of most birds), so this will be a fun adventure! Really hoping there are some hens in our flock LOL

Welcome to BYC! Kids and chickens go together like peanut butter and jelly - I was your daughter many years ago and my love for them never faded (even when it came time to clean up after them, lol)
ISA Browns are a hybrid that is bred specifically to be sexed, by color, at hatch - so there is no worry about an "oops" rooster as long as none of your chicks are solid white/yellow vs. a nice red/brown (what I can see in the photo are all female)

Welcome! Hope you find them to be as much fun as I have.

Also, ISA are egg-laying machines - you will be up to your ears in nice, brown eggs in about another six months......
oh good! We mentioned to my mother-in-law that we were getting chickens, and she said to get an extra couple so she can have eggs, and of course, my mom and sister want eggs too! I'm thinking I should be looking up some egg recipes :D

And thank you for the chick sex reassurance!

Ah, see, that's just a reason to add to your flock next spring (I am a bit of an enabler when it comes to dealing with chicken math) - then you can name a bird after each of them (and, if you play your cards right, you can get them to feed their birds by pitching in on the feed bills in exchange for eggs)

I like the way you think!!
