Hello! I am very new to chickens. We started 3 weeks ago with three Buff Orpington chicks and one Ameraucana chick. Their names are Flower, Queenie, Dot, and Millie (although we think she might be a Miller, given the comb and wattles she has started to grow). So far, they seem to be doing well. We are building our own run, but having the coop made, as our building skills are rudimentary at best.

We have a human family of three - myself, my husband, and my five year old daughter, Lulu. We also have a big black dog named Annie and two cats named Misty and Polkadot (who is all black).

I've really enjoyed lurking on the site for the past few weeks and have learned a lot!

Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Best wishes to you, your family, flock and other critters.

If you are wondering about the gender of your buff orp, we can help if you post here. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

Also, be sure to check out our learning center and coop area.

Welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock!

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! I really like Buff Orpingtons for their beauty and calm, gentle temperament, and for these reasons, I still keep a few of them in my flock. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you! We actually chose the Orps for their temperament. I have a five year old daughter and wanted calm, gentle chickens so that she could enjoy them as well. They are outside in their coop for their first night tonight. I'm nervous, but happy to have them off my porch.

Orps have as good a temperament as can be found in the chicken world. I never had an aggressive one. Good luck with your Orpingtons.
