Hello. I started with chickens last year, and am really enjoying them. My chickens made it through the winter, and now we are getting new chicks to add to the flock for this year. I built a 4'x8'x4' coop that has worked well for this winter, but it needs to be moved as I am getting more chickens and it needs to be in a larger area. I am either going to move it to kind of an open area where I can put a strand of electric fence around it to protect from predators, OR I can move it into a little shed/barn where I plan to have some goats soon. Question. Is there any problem with getting the chickens to just roost in the barn without a coop? is there any problem with having chickens with goats (diseases transmission, etc). Would you move the coop into the barn, or just nearby? the barn has running water, so makes everything much easier.
Thanks. It is nice to find a group like this. I am looking forward to more chickens this year since mine all did so well last year, and we are enjoying eggs daily.

from Washington State!

I don't know about goats, but I have chick-n-hutches inside a metal shed and am quite happy with the reduction in wind whistling through the hutches! Nice windbreak. The only downside is that I have to run a light bulb out there in winter due to the moisture where I am and the fact that it is a metal shed with condensation.

You don't want to make your roosts too high or you could be asking for bumblefoot.
