New in New York

I live in dutchess county with my husband and two boys. A neighbor was moving and couldn't take her chickens. So we have 6 rhode island red chickens. Although not sure if that is what they really are. I have read that they are usually a dark red with black tail feathers. I will have to post some pictures to get some opinions. We have only had them for 2 weeks and I like them so much. I already am thinking about adding more chickens. I am open to any advice for a chicken newbie. Thanks
