Hmmm... See, that might be the problem to begin with. If mods could end up misunderstanding you, what about the other forum users? Isn't that exactly the point? I know, it's hard sometimes to get it right and I for instance am a galaxy away from a literary degree but I am not assuming that a little warning would be so detremental to my health

. It would likely knock some sensibility into my head and I would be on my merry typing ways...

A better idea might be to read your response carefully and make sure that what you are conveying cannot be misinterpreted.

Point made. It is kind of hard to know how someone else might interpret tho.... I promise to be much more careful.

PROMISE. !

I nominate you as a Mod!!!!

What?!?!? Oh no, I would not be good at it. I'm leaving that to the professionals.

Hey, anybody want a kitten? I have 4 I need to find homes for....... F.R.E.E. !!!

Ok, I'll try to make this SUPER clear!

Our warning system IS the PM that you are wanting sent.

Some members are misunderstanding that a warning is a form of punishment. We'll continue to try to educate our members on what a warning is and we hope the handful of members struggling with the concept will try to be a bit more open minded.

A warning is just that, a NOTICE to let you know that:

1) A member of our community reported your post because they felt it violated the rules
2) Our staff read the report, usually discuss it with other staff, and a decision is made
3) A WARNING (not a ban, a slap on the wrist, a paper cut with lemon juice, or anything else painful) is given as a reminder to think about how your post may be interpreted.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what your INTENT is... it matters how the majority of people do / will interpret your posts.

Please take a moment to look at it from our perspective. We receive THOUSANDS of reports and have to deal hundreds of people that have hurt feelings, or are ticked off and want to start a fight, etc.... all because someone wasn't careful about how they said something.

BTW, I read a funny thought from one of our moderators and it got me to thinking about instituting a new system:

1. Every time we get a report we’ll contact the reporter to discuss how they interpreted your post. We’ll suggest ways they could also interpret the post.
2. We’ll contact you for more details on exactly what you meant
3. If you did mean to post in the way that was interpreted, we’ll ask you if it is okay if we send you a warning.
4. If you didn’t mean to post in an inappropriate way, we’ll randomly ask 20 other members to read your post and vote on how they interpreted it.
5. If 15 / 20 people vote that your post was interpreted in a way that is against our rules, we’ll issue you a message via PM that we’re going to send you a warning
6. We’ll warn you that you might get a notice that you might get a warning that you might get an infraction.
7. We’ll give you an infraction with points which have no impact on your account / access to the site.

Oh, and to manage this process, we’ll have to charge every member $30 a month to pay for 600 new moderators to manage the above process. Please send payment to: [email protected]

Now, go pet a chicken!

Ok, all jokes aside (to be clear, the above post was a JOKE)

:

The staff here at BYC LOVE this community! We all donate countless hours to ensure BYC remains a friendly place where people can ask questions, get answers, and build long-term friendships.

We have a collective 50+ years experience working with this community. We create rules, policies, and enforcement of the rules based on this experience coupled with our love of the community.

We wish we never had to ever give a single warning, point, temp ban, or permanent ban. Heck, I wish we didn't need more than one moderator... just someone to change userIDs and give out funny user titles.

Unfortunately every community need rules and ways to report, track, and enforce those rules. This new system has proven to be a sanity saver for our moderators, and a great way to help our members learn what is / isn't appropriate on BYC without having to resort to removing access to our great community.

Please keep in mind that we're not perfect, so if we do make a mistake on how your post was interpreted (again, your post is reported/reviewed by multiple members / moderators) please do the following:

1) Try to see how your post was misinterpreted and be more careful about the way you phrase things
2) Let a moderator know that your post was misinterpreted and that you didn't mean what others thought it meant and that you'll be more careful

Again, I want to stress that the warning / infraction system is NOT a form of punishment, but a way for us to track warnings, educate members on our rules, and be even more "fair" with how we moderate all of our members.

Thanks for your understanding and support of this amazing community of VERY diverse individuals from literally all over the world!
