anyone on here have quail? would be wonderful to find quail people in NJ. i have two chinese button quail eggs incubating from a friend and a dozen that will be coming soon, and im unsure of if i will be able to keep them all. knowing there would be someone to rehome them to would be reassuring!

What does one do with button quail? Are they for pets? Do you keep them inside or out? I am planning on hatching some cots and chuckar for a friend this year. I did bobwhites last year and I hated them. Insane, flighty, and really aggressive toward each other.

they are more for pets and sometimes snake food... you cant really keep them outside unless the temperature doesnt get very cold cause they dont regulate temperature well. theyre not as flighty when you handle them a lot from a young age, but i cant speak to their aggressiveness. lots of people use them to keep the bottoms of bird cages clean, since they mostly just stay on the ground and will clean up the spilled seed.

Looks like a chicken breed may have been chosen already. My daughter saw a picture of a chicken on my computer today and when the subject was brought up what kind of chicken would she like, her response was "a red, and blue, and black and brown one, no wait, a BLUE chicken!? thats silly" doubting that such a chicken existed. Brought up a pic of a blue laced red wyandotte and her eyes lit up. "yeah, yeah, that one" Anyone know of any locals lol.

For all you looking for chickens, I know Jersey Chickens in Jackson sells a variety of birds. Don't know if they are hatching right now though.

So, today was horrible, but I'm very lucky. A hawk came down and attacked my silkie while my birds were free ranging. My dad and I ran outside just in time. He was able to beat the hawk with a garden hose and it flew away. I have never been so close to a hawk. They are very brazen, my father beat the thing about 5 times before it flew away, and then it had the nerve to come back 5 minutes later. I locked up all my birds. I'm very fortunate my silkie was still alive. She lost a lot of feathers, and had a very deep slice on her back (I could see the fat and everything, and it was triangle shaped so it was kind of wide). She didn't bleed that much. I had to rush her out to garden state vet hospital because it was the only emergency clinic that takes chickens. They stitched her up, glued another hole in her shoulder, gave her antibiotics, and she's back home now. I'm very fortunate she's alive, but I wish it didn't happen. I'm so paranoid to let them free range now. Everyone watch out because the hawks are bad right now.

So sorry to hear about your bad day. Yes hawks are scary when they have your bird. That hawk must have been very hungry to come back so soon. Maybe its old or sick. Good luck to your brave little hen. I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

I thought it must have been hungry too, especially since it's Robin season (theyre everywhere right now) and i believe Cooper's hawks (I think it was a cooper's) prefer small birds... it's not like there is a food shortage. must have thought it'd be easier to catch something that can't fly. I've seen this particular hawk stalking my house for a few days now. It was staring them down the other day. I should've known it would strike any day. I've had my birds for 3 years and never had an attack until now :/ Thank you and I hope she gets better. Don't know if I want them free ranging until the summer when there seems to be less hawks.
