Hi Judy. I hope your critters are doing ok and you're having a good summer. I tried sending you a PM but your box is full. I was wondering if I could get your opinion on a drumstick injury? Or if anyone else on here can help that would be great. My RIR LouLou was limping last night. It seems high up on the leg or maybe the joint. The leg doesn't bother her when I touch it but I haven't poked around any higher. I do feel heat so I guess that means that circulation is good. When she tries to walk she sort of lifts up on that side and drags her toes on the tops a little. I brought her in right away last night when I found her. She's eating fine. What I was wondering is, can they pop their leg out of joint? Or would a good sprain look that way also? The other thing she was doing this morning was stretching it forward. It kind of looked like she hits a stuck point on the way forward and then can push through it. Really strange. Almost like stretching but very jerky movement. Do you have any idea? I hate to run to the vet. My dogs bills lately are putting us in the poor house. With them it's been Lyme Disease for both, Thyroid, Cushings and knee injury. Did you know Shop-Rite will fill pet antibiotics for free? Yup, but they probably don't want me in there anymore for all the Doxycyclene they have filled for me. I wish I had your other email at work with me but I don't. Hopefully you'll see this. If not, I'll either call or email you later today. Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Jill!! So sorry LouLou is hurting. Glad the circulation seems good. If you can, and maybe you already have done this since posting, try gently feeling the leg in the areas you suspect are a problem and compare with the other leg. Hopefully there is no dislocation. Hopefully she just got a sprain jumping down off of something. If you can keep her somewhere where she can't jump up onto or down off of anything for the time being, that would be good. You may already be giving pain relief...1 baby aspirin per cup of drinking water will also have an antiinflammatory effect. To encourage her to get some in her to take the edge off the pain, you can dunk bits of her favorite fruits in the aspirin water and hand feed to her. A vet might have chosen Metacam for this but absent that, aspirin may help her. I have used it when BJ has gotten a limp from time to time over the years and it seems to give him relief till he can heal.

Did not know Shop-Rite would fill pet antibiotics for free! I must remember that! Thank you. Sorry to hear your dogs have had one thing after naother and hope everything settles out soon.

Please keep me posted on LouLou - hoping she's a little better today though I know sprains and such can take some weeks to heal.

Thanks JJ. I don't feel any difference between the two sides. I got up under there good last night. She's not any better but I guess it'll be a while. I am giving the baby aspirin. No problem getting it into her. She's still got a decent appetite. I have her in a huge dog crate set up as a chicken hospital so I guess I'll keep her in for a while. I can't risk putting her outside. She loves to roost off the ground but man when she comes down she comes down heavy.

Thanks for your help and I'll talk to you soon!

Yup, sounds like sprain, pulled muscle. She should be fine in time with any luck at all. Especially since she can't get into more trouble while you have her in the 'infirmary.' When BJ gets leg injuries I let him do whatever he wants all day (as the only time he tries to roost is at bedtime) and then I restrict him till morning....

Crossing fingers and toes that she'll be fine.

so it is starting to look like only 2 of my 8 ducks are female, does anyone out there have an abundance of females that they'd be wiling to trade? i'm looking to switch out a mallard drake and possibly 3 cayuga drakes, theres a good chance one of my crested cayugas is male also. i'd be willing to do a 2 for 1 swap if need be for any breed except muscovies. as of now i only have a pekin and crested cayuga female that i'm sure about. i would love runners, campbells or swedes. i cant be picky though, i just need a better ratio

My Pet Chicken has an Emergency Post Office Adoption - they have an order at the Summit, NJ Post Office for 25 assorted female vaccinated, day-old chicks that need a home. You'll have to pick them up in Summit, NJ. They cannot be reshipped. Please email [email protected] if you're interested. The first person that can pick them up this morning (7-7-11) will get them for free.

Jill, how is LouLou doing?
