New kid

Would be a good idea to be there at least first time. One thing that does enter my mind, is the size of their run. I'm inclined to think that it is kind of small. (you did mention that you have room only for 3 chickens)
That can be a factor in your 2 older hens being territorial over the small area. If thing do not go as smooth as you desire, you may have to keep doing the Cage, see, and get used to me. For a while longer.:idunno
I would also like to suggest that you put in some odd items at least temporarily into your run area. This way your small one has someplace to escape, and hide.

Okay, so my husband and i mess with dog training and one thing that seems to grease the wheels for acceptance is special treats. Our dogs think I can't stand that silly b**** except she comes with yummy treats! I'm wondering if on the waking up together morning you could throw in a health treat so your bigs associate her with grubs, mealworm, scratch, etc. Does that work with chickens?

Hi Rich

thanks so much. I'm feeling overwhelmed but I always believe things will work out fine. I can extend the run if I have to, and hope that Smudge is a girl and all will be well. I will give her time out in the yard over the next few weeks, and bring her in at night until she gets her growth spurt. I didn't realise fancy breeds were available on island, but I may even be able to get her a fancy bantam friend so she's not the third wheel.
have an awesome weekend
