It could be my imagination.
This is my first flock. They are now about 20 weeks old and a few of them are starting to lay. Normal inconsistency with size, etc.

They free range for at least 6 hours a day.
There are tons of tomatoes and wild flowers in my yard. Lots of weeds but not a lot of grass.

Provided oyster shell and switched to layer feed around week 18.

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this or if it's all in my head!

Eggs will taste like what a chicken eats.. that said we had an experience similar this winter. Our eggs were tasting like poo, real bad taste, I had no clue why. One day I went to check on (mid winter and they are my sons so he did most of the care). I saw their water bowl(a heated dog bowl for winter). It was disgusting poo in it where the chickens were walking in it and pooing in it. I was not happpy with my son. I explained how that wasn’t healthy for the chickens and it wasn’t healthy for us. He kept it clean and within two weeks the eggs were back to normal.

How interesting. Thank you for the suggestion. Their water is pretty clean, 5 gallon drinker and I dump the tray daily .. but they might not be drinking enough because the yard is big and I don't see them return to the drinker during the day while they free range. I have an automatic waterer for the dogs on the other side of the yard but I doubt they've found it and I didn't think to show them... but I will now. Couldn't hurt.

That probably isn’t the issue with yours. It may just be a weed that they have found that is making the eggs taste off. Kinda watch and see what they are eating the most of. That might tell you what is going on.

Our chickens don’t often return to get water when free ranging either. When they need it they will come get it. :)

What does an egg shell taste like?
Crushing up eggshells into a powder is probably the most pleasant way to eat eggshells. A more recent study, from a 2013 issue of the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition, notes that though adding powdered eggshells to spaghetti, bread, or pizza slightly changed the texture, there were not notable changes in flavor—and that seems like a fair trade-off if you're looking to up your daily calcium intake.
