We have a 22 week old Speckled Sussex who has been laying for about 3 weeks now with no problems until Sunday this past weekend. She was in the nesting box for about 30 minutes and did her "I laid an egg" song, but when we went out there was no egg. Skip foward to Monday, she could have laid an egg, did not witness, but there was an egg we could not confirm from who, that had a tiny bit of what looked like blood, not 100% sure though. This morning we went in to let the girls out and noticed that under her was a pile of yellow yolk with a shriveled up looking egg, a wad of soft egg shell. She has access to oyster shell along with crushed egg shell and layer pellets, she acts just as she does everyday, very active and eats and drinks, we've looked into this online and in the books we have, and have come to a few possibilities, and I would like to know if anyone else has seen this is a new layer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The possibilities:
just a fluke, New layer
not enough time between eggs forming
stressed
heat
vitamin deficient
startled at night
not enough calcium
too much spinach?
internal issues

Thank you to anyone that might shed some light on these reasons.

I have been getting some soft shell eggs lately, I think its due to the heat. If they aren't acting off, I would just keep an eye out. Probably just a glitch in the egg laying machine...

Thank you for your response! I do hope it was just a glitch, it became somewhat alarming when she went back to the nesting box and laid down like she needed to lay but no egg again. I plan on feeding some extra calcium tonight just to be on the safe side?

Some of my new layers had this happen back in early July, they have since perfected the art and all eggs are good.
They also practiced the egg song alot with no eggs to be seen.I think it will work out for you.

That's not the answer I was looking for

Just kidding with you! She continues to eat and act like a chicken should, the sitting in the nesting boxes and laying no egg today just seemed odd, but I suppose her schedule is just messed up after the incident?
