I have a Cuckoo Maran and she has been laying for a week. Everyday. However, only one egg has been usable. Most have been broken. Sometimes she lays an egg and a half shell? They are also different colors, one was a beautiful speckled like cuckoos are supposed to lay, the good egg was a chocolate brown typical of a Maran and some have been lighter brown—- those tend to be the worst off. She has access to oyster shells. I have been paying close attention to who is laying and when. My australorp and RR lay every day and their eggs are prefect. It also doesn’t seem like she is eating the eggs— I am super concerned about this and have gotten them out right away. I also have a Wyandotte and a Brahma but they don’t even go into the coop/nesting box at all so I don’t think they are doing anything yet.

Will it work itself out? Am I just being a paranoid new chicken mom? Is there anything else I can do to help her?

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

Yes, this should work itself out. It sounds very much like new layer hiccups. The reproductive system is very complicated and can sometimes take a short time to work out it's kinks.

Your vigilance is one of the best things. :highfive:

The other best thing you can do for her is just maintain routine and and not diminish your formulated ration with excess low quality treats like corn or scratch. Dual purpose birds such as those you mention will do best at about 18-20% protein if possible.

Congrats on your new layer! :wee

Probably.
Eh, maybe, but understandable.
What all and how exactly are you feeding?
Pics of eggs might help here.

I have a Marans that lays some funky eggs between the good ones, it's annoying.
