Hi
(new joiner :)) I have two 22 week old Light Sussex chickens and for the last 3 weeks they have been laying soft-shell eggs. I've given them oyster shell grit and they are on layers pellets. I'm new and wondered is this period/length normal and how long does this typically last in first place? I must add that I have had 2 successful hard eggs in the best box but all the rest soft shell have been under the perch or in the run. Thanks!

Should have cleared up in 3 weeks.
Softies can slip out anywhere.
Are they eating the OS.....is it available at all times in a separate feeder?
Are you feeding any other foods/treats?

Oh, and... Welcome to BYC! @LodgeChickens

Thanks aart, will update to the profile to help. In England, so the weather is warm as we head to the end of summer. Yes, they have access to OS but I notice not eating a lot, I think I will break it up into smaller amounts and mix into its feed as well. No other treats so far.

I find my hens eat more OS if I scatter it on the ground than if I leave it in a dish. I also give them some bone meal, the kind that is used as a supplement for dogs & cats, if they are giving me soft shell eggs. They usually eat it right up from the ground. Adding apple cider vinegar to their water can have an effect on metabolising calcium, and not for the better.
