new long island chicken mom!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Congratulations! It's always so exciting getting those first chicks. I have had all of those breeds over the years, and you've got some very friendly and gentle breeds. I think you actually came out better with the Speckled Sussex than with the Wyandotte (obviously not everyone's going to agree with me) as my Speckled Sussex have always been very friendly and gentle birds (the Wyandottes were usually docile as well, but I've occasionally had an aggressive one, which has not been the case with the Sussex). The lay rate for both breeds is about the same (both good layers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Congrats on your new babies!! I hope they are ok when you bring them home today! Make sure to dip everybody's beaks in the water before you feed them. Get them hydrated before they eat so they don't get pasty butt.

Here is a nice article from our learning center on raising your chicks for the first 60 days....https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...ks-the-first-60-days-of-raising-baby-chickens

Enjoy your new babies and welcome to our flock!

SO got the babies yesterday!!!! 3 of them are perfect happy, healthy, little love fluffs! (henrietta, buffy, and mo) my little speckled sussex (esmeralda) was injured and im afraid she may not make it....

when i opened the box and took them all out her head was stuck under the heating pad... she was lolling her head around like drunk (her little neck muscles werent working) i was afraid she broke her neck but she was moving her feet around.... no chirping tho... she was just laying on the floor occasionally flopping around... noticed she also had pasty butt so i took care of it right away... after that was figured out i went back to helping my little ese. her little legs were twitching and her body was shaking...she couldnt keep her head up so i wrapped her up in a hand towel to keep her warm and to support her head to give her neck a chance to rest.. I have been dripping honey water into her beak frequently (about every half hour or whenever i can) which she happily drinks up. late last night she started doing better... chirping and occasionally opening her eyes... but I noticed her neck was very swollen and bruised. It was time for bed so I swaddled her up good so she stayed warm... (and in hopes that the she would stop moving around so much but she squirms when she wants to) This morning she is doing a bit better.... much more chirpy and her eyes were open when i went in to check on them... she is still injured, the swelling went way down but her neck is still bady bruised...and still cant support her head. her little body is very limp but i can tell shes really trying. just exhausted from fighting for her little life.

i have to quarantine her from the other birds because Mo is a jerk and will peck at her.. i put her in the box they came in inside my brooder box (there is plenty of room) She has a heat lamp over her... i have a brinsea eco-glow for my healthy three... but they seem more interested in Eses heat lamp... any suggestions on this? i checked and both under heat lamp and under the eco-glow is 95...

any suggestions on how to help little Esmeralda? or about the heat lamp vs eco glow?

Thanks all!!!

Aww! I'm sorry about the chick! But I'm glad the others are ok. You should continue to keep her warm. Make sure to get her to drink too. Instead of separating her completely from the other chicks try and have it so they can still see each other. That way she is not bullied when she goes back in.
You may want to ask more about treating her here https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

As for the heat sources it doesn't really matter. Heat lamps are good as they can help prevent bulling if you use a red light. But they are more of a danger. Eco glows are wonderful so you may want to use that.

Good luck!

Yes thank you!!! there is a thread about the same issue that I am having... I already commented on it a little while ago... its from 2010... the original poster did not have a good outcome but other posters did and that made me hopeful. I just feel so bad for her. shes my little special nugget. so far with all of the research and after speaking with a vet tech at mypetchicken.com i think i am going to keep up with the sugar water and keep her wrapped like a burrito so she doesnt move around too much. do you think she is close enough to the other babies? ** please see the attached picture... shes in the box on the right) she chirps so i am sure they can hear her... not sure if they can see her so well... but they pick on her if i leave her in the open there with them. (don't mind snoopy in the front! hes protecting the chicks.) BY THE WAY** do you see the little fluffy buffy butt under the heater? I see you are a fan of buff orps :o) OH one more random silly question... i put a small stick in there for them to perch on... i read it will keep them happy / occupied... they seem like they are scared of it / stay far away... when do they start perching or should i take it out for now?

They'll start perching around 1-3 weeks of age so you may not need it just yet.

I'm sorry to hear about Esmeralda. X2 on the Emergency link that Mountain Peeps provided. I hope Esmeralda recovers.
