Hi! My fiancé and I became the unexpected parents to an orphaned chick in October. We live on property that has free range chickens. One of the hens hid and hatched two chicks in mid-late September. One very early morning while going to work I notice one of the chicks in the grass calling out. I stayed and watched over it for hours looking for mom and sibling, only to later discover two spots of feathers. We think a fox got them. The remaining chick was too little to be on its own outside or in the coop, so we took it in. We have been raising “Mocha” inside using a very large dog crate for her to roost in at night and during the day she wanders the house with me when we aren’t outside. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago when Mocha became Momo as she is a he and crowing!! 😂
It’s been an interesting journey but so much fun!
I joined the group so I can better learn how to introduce him to the rest of the flock, and how best to care for him.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

It shouldn't be long before Momo will want to be out with his flockmates. Has he seen them lately? You could put him in a cage or pen out by them so they can all reacclimate to each other.

Then if he's about their size, I'd just put him in the coop at night and be around in the morning to make sure he's okay and able to get to food/water.

We're glad you're here!

As someone who's had the "surprise" rooster chick and who's also ended up raising a hen chick in the house (long story, but she never integrated into a flock), I greatly enjoyed your introduction.

It's sad about the mom an sibling, but thank goodness you rescued one chick. I hope Momo knows he's one lucky boy!

Best wishes to you and your entire flock, and welcome to BYC!
