New Member and New Coop

WELCOME! Love your coop! You can be classified as a carpenter in my book

. I think you did a great job.

That's a sweet pic with your son looking on too. I bet he'll be a big help with them as they grow together.

It may just be the photo color but I also noticed what looks to be cedar shavings in your coop. They can be toxic to chicks/chickens and if they are indeed cedar, I'd replace them with pine shavings as soon as possible. Other than that...those are some lucky chickens!

Keep everyone posted on them and thanks for sharing your coop and chickens with us.

They are indeed cedar. My father-in-law runs a saw mill and throws cedar in his coop so I had no idea until it was mentioned in this thread and I did a little researching.

He mostly runs cedar and oak at his mill...never any pine. Should I get some oak shavings from him or is there something better that I can purchase? What about one of those big bails of shavings one buys for hamsters and rabbit cages??

Oak or pine would be great..just NOT cedar.

We have to be so careful with shavings here because of the horses too...They can't be in black walnut or cherry ..it's always something, huh! I mostly use pine, but have used oak and maple before too...hey..they were FREEEEE.

You can also use aspen if available.
