New member and soon to be chicken owner

Welcome to BYC! My teenage daughter and I started with chicks, and really enjoyed the baby stage, and feel we're getting to know them. Of course, the downside is that we have to wait a long time for eggs - and we ended up with a mystery chick who turned out not to be a sexed longhorn hybrid pullet, but a bantam cochin who's a boy. So I can see reasons to go with pullets. Someday I want to start from eggs.

We ended up getting 6 Rhode Island Red pullets from a farmer here in Alabama. We'll see how they do. So far, so good. They are actually very friendly and have eaten out of our hands. My 2 year old daughter LOVES them. It looks like my home-made coop has room for about 5 or 6 more, so we may wait a few months and see about getting some more. Thanks everyone for the input!
