New member but not new to chickens.

Welcome! And I understand your story very well. After keeping perfectly healthy chickens for about a decade, I went through a *probable* Marak's diagnosis last winter. I read BYC long before my chicken-rearing days, but when that happened, I finally decided to join also.

And I'm really glad that I did! This group is so kind and refreshing and also quite fun, much better than anything else I've seen online in a long time. And it's nice to participate and give back a little by sharing some of the knowledge that we've learned through the years.

You may not find solid answers here on Marak's simply because there are very few studies regarding Marek's in backyard flocks, but you will find lots of support. Also, be encouraged. I truly believe that it's absolutely possible to move successfully forward with Marek's in your flock. Many here have done so. 🤎

Hello Jessica and welcome to BYC! :frow

Your flock sounds lovely! I am so sorry to hear you may have Marek's in your flock. :hugs It sure is becoming more common. Have you added any new birds lately? Marek's can also be picked up from the environment as well if you live near any of these large chicken egg farms. Dander blows on the wind. Hopefully you can get the advice you need here on BYC.

Welcome to our community!
Yes, unfortunately. I guess I got too comfortable in being able to avoid Marek’s and let my guard down. We took a few birds from a friend who was getting rid of them recently. They all seem fine, but they may be carriers nonetheless. We also had a farm vet come to our house on an emergency call for a baby goat we have and, as he goes from farm to farm all day, I didn’t even think about biosecurity when he came over. I was so worried about the little doeling that was going to die (she pulled through!) that I didn’t think about him bringing possible Marek dander from another farm either. 😞 Those are the most likely scenarios.
