Greetings!

My wife and I are buying our first house southeast of Tampa, Florida, 12/01/2014 (if all goes well.) It is a countryish property with 2/3rds of an acre and we are very excited to start keeping some egg laying chickens. Starting with 3 and working are way up to about 8 or 10 over time.

We have both been reading and watching lots of videos. I'm sure I will be posting questions as they arise :)

Be seeing you!

Welcome to BYC, Chris! Glad you decided to join our flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Do you have any breed preferences?

Good layers that are fairly docile and would be able to handle Florida summer heat. The number of options are mind boggling.

One breed I would definitely suggest is the Black Australorp. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds) and they are extremely hardy in both heat and cold. I raised them in CA where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F) once, and in northern Kansas where the temperature dropped to 30 F below zero one winter, and in both climate extremes they came through like troopers. They are also very calm and docile. My children, and now my granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) made lap pets of them. And they are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. A Black Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while none of mine have ever reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I've still had a few of them lay over 300 eggs in a year. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
