New member from Hawaii

Thanks for checking in and I would love to give an update. So the chicks were mailed out USPS Priority the evening of 7/30/14 and arrived at my post office the morning of 8/1/14 and I got the call just after 7am. The USPS was so fast and I assume the got a bit more attention being live animals so I am really grateful to them for that.

I'll start by saying all were alive and active and really got after the grogel we mixed up for them. I was very surprised about the number of chicks though. We ordered 10 and got 15. One we lost on day 2 who was very lethargic and just didn't want to eat or drink. We ordered 2 each of 5 different breeds and got extras of almost every breed. A very nice man called me on the 30th and told me they had a dissapointing hatch on one of the breeds so I asked for a roo of that breed instead of the pullet and just an extra pullet of another breed but got much more, one of the breeds they sent me 5 of. So that's a bit perplexing I would love to think they sent extra pullets but I think that might be terribly optimistic. The chicks were sent out from Cackle who I assume supplies Chickens for backyards and Cackles min order is 15 so that might be why I got the extras but if C for BY specializes in small orders that might be a bit startling for someone who ordered 5 or 6 or even 7 so i'm not sure what happened there. I'll just raise them and re-home any roo's that are in there and keep one or two depending.

Overall they are strong, healthy, happy with no issues I've seen and so cute.

Im on the big island, and ordered from Meyer. Shipping took three days tho I got a call at 7am on the third day my babes were here. I will only order from Meyer going forward! USPS is how they handle

Aloha! I used to be more active on BYC when I lived mainland. I recently moved to BI, Kailua Kona and happy to read the BYC forum again!
Today a friend asked if could take two abandoned chicks. You know how it is, once you see the fluff balls there's no turning back... Has anyone raised Hawaiian feral chicks before. My previous flock in SF were Americauna, Turken and 2 Silkies. I haven't read any posts about raising feral chicks to thought I'd ask the experts on BYC:)
Glad to be back!

Oh Hawaii, how nice been some years since I was over there so to say I envoy you is an
understatement to say the least ....

Just have some shelter for the to get in out of the heavy rains and they should do just fine
and if it were not for feral animals there would be no predators for you to worry about ...

Good luck....

Aloha

I was going to tell you that due to the avian influenza out break that chicks aren't being sent to Hawaii. Then I as that this thread is a year old lol.
