Greetings everyone!
My name is Jeremy and we are from Northeast Wisconsin.
We are new to chickens this year. We got an assortment of 15 day old laying chicks from Murray Mcmurray in late April, and my wife and daughter have really taken to them since. Through the learning process we lost a couple chickens since then, but recently added 5 more to our flock. We currently have 17 chickens, with the potential of 1 being a roo. The potential roo is a silver laced polish, its name is Buddy. Buddy hasn't laid an egg yet, but also hasn't shown signs of being a rooster either.
We have a nice variety of chicken breeds. Turkens X2 , Buff Orpington X1, Barred Rock X1, Americaunas X3, White Leghorn X1, Silver laced Polish X1, French Copper Maran X1, Delaware X1, Red Star X1.
On Thursday we went to a somewhat local Organic CSA that was looking to thin their flock a little before winter. They bought day olds from Murray also which were around 10 months old now. From them we bought a Black Austrolorp X1, Red Star X1, Whiting True Blue X2, and Whiting True Green X1.
We have some serious concern over the leg size of one of the Whiting True Blue chickens, but I'll post that elsewhere.
I think taking above average care of our Chickens is what makes us enjoy having them the most. It's a good lesson for our daughter about the importance of taking care of animals. I make sure she understands these chickens live to produce food for us, which is the reason my belief is so strong to take very good care of them. All of our chickens have names and have been handled a lot. The new chickens we just got will need some work there.
Since getting the chickens I've done many internet searches trying to learn more about all the questions which arise, and BYC has frequently popped up with the answer. Unfortunately I will probably have more questions than answers at this point, but I would still like to help and contribute when I can!
