I have , with my wife and doughter and son have started raising chickens. We have been learning from this extremely helpful site all about raising Chickens. So we bought 3 Meran Hens. They where of egg laying age,5 months old. We have had so much fun and enjoyed the eggs so much that we bought four poultes yesterday. White Bresse, golden Braekel, Gold legbar, cream legbar. So we are in now. Thanks for all the advice.

Congratulations on your decision to raise chickens! Chickens are a wonderful addiction I am up to around 60 lol. I love their colors, attitude, and of course eggs! This site has a wealth of information and people are always willing to help. Best of luck to you.

Thanks. I will add that the hens picked on the poults so we went out and bought a Rabbit hutch for them until they get older. This info was gleamed from BYC. ;)

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, the pullets will need to be the same size as the adult chickens before you can mix everybody in. When they are at least 3 or 4 months old, you can mix them into the flock. Do it very slowly over a 3 week period. You can't just throw new birds into a flock. Keep the pullets in a cage or behind a fenced off area but within the flock at all times. Everybody sees, nobody touches. Leave them all this way for about 3 weeks. This will give the original flock time to work some of the pecking order out from behind wire. Come mixing day it should go fairly smooth. Watch them closely that day and the rest of that week, and always intervene if it turns bloody.

Enjoy your wonderful flock and welcome to ours!

Hello BYC community,

I have been utilizing this website to assist me in raising my chickens. I find it to be very informative, interesting and fun. I am from San Diego and have a multiple of breeds (Swedish Flowers, Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Andalusian, Penedesenca, Sicilian Buttercup, Ameraucanas, Silkie, Silver Lace Wyndotte) that I have been collecting since I discovered chickens in April 2013. I know that BYC meets in June in Ramona and I would like to know if there are other meetings scheduled for this year and if there are what should I expect. Thank you.

Congratulations! I just joined BYC today as well. I'm interested in knowing where you found such variety of chicken breeds in San Diego.
