Hi there everyone, my name is Christine and I just joined this forum a few minutes ago. I live in Chesterfield, Virginia and am a brand new owner of chickens. Back in the first week of March, I purchased 4 chicks- 2 are supposed to be Buff Orpingtons, 1 is supposed to be an "asian black" and the last one was labeled as a "Issa Brown". I use the word "supposed", because as I learn more about chickens, the more I understand the sometimes mislabeling of breeds. Specifically, the one that was labeled as an asian black- now looks exactly like a barred plymouth rock- so who knows?
Right now, my favorite thing about raising backyard chickens is just learning about a new pet- and also for all of the new experiences for myself and my 2 daughters (14 and 6). I am divorced and live with my 2 girls, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 4 chickens. I work in the corporate world as a data analyst and as far as hobbies go- I can't say that I really have any, other than raising kids and animals!
I found BYC sometime over the past couple of months, just from doing various online searches for information regarding raising backyard chickens. This morning I decided to finally join because I am looking to get more information regarding the difference between hens and roosters specifically in orpingtons. The reason for this is that as my 2 orpinginton chickens (both unsexed) continue to grow, they each have completely different physical traits, with one looking more and more like a rooster- but now the one I considered to be my hen- is acting like a rooster!
