Hi all! A friend gave us her coop, which started us down this amazing rabbit hole of chicken raising! We are learning as we go and are looking forward to gaining knowledge from more experienced chicken owners!
We are a family of 4, living in a suburb of Denver, CO. We have a friendly cockapoo that is fascinated by the squeeky chicks. We are excited about this new learning adventure!
We currently have 10 chicks that we were told at least half would die. So far, they’re all happy and healthy and growing strong! They’re getting too big for their brooder, but with the nights in Colorado still getting down to the 40s, I’m not sure if we should take them outside yet. I read that it needs to be above 65° or they have to have lost all of their baby down feathers. Every morning when I go out to check on them a few are perched on the edge of the box. They’re in the garage, so they’re safe if they do get out, but I’d rather not have 10 chicks roaming the garage!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens.. Well feathered birds can take 40 all day long
Thank you, Penny1960! They aren’t well feathered yet. They are only 3-4 weeks old and still have baby down on their heads and necks (see pic of one). I’d love to keep them in the coop overnight, but I’m worried that they aren’t ready.

Hello neighbor. Just made the move from Boulder to Brighton.
Your chicks will be fine out in the coop. Give them a well bedded huddle box where they only need to heat up a small area instead of the entire coop to stay warm. They will be out running around in the morning and not miss a beat.
