A bit of an over kill for a Raspberry Pi, just a simple magnetic door switch and a LED would work to remind you to close the door. But then you could have the Raspberry Pi play a wav file at dusk each day saying "Close the Door" over and over until it is closed.

Haha thanks guys I love the ideas and I was thinking a magnetic sensor as well like for a security system and then finding a way to have it signal a led light in our kitchen.

Actually they are magnetic switches, no sensing.

Can you run some wire out there?

Is there electricity in the coop?

No electricity and no easy way to run a wire (I would have to trench through my driveway)

But I will look into some magnetic switches.
