Hi! I've just joined after lurking for ages. We've just recently gotten six chickens in two coops and I'm looking forward to making friends on here and getting lots of useful advice.

This is the third time that we have tried to keep chickens. The first time our coop wasn't as secure as we thought and all of our chickens were foxed. The second time I went outside in the morning and the coop was unlocked and open and all of our chickens were gone. I later heard from a neighbour that several other chickens in our neighbourhood had been nicked from locked coops. I still have no real idea what happened.

We changed the locks on the coop to make it more secure, added an extension and waited about a year to try again.

We now have four adult hens 2-3 years old (an Australorp, an Australorp X RIR, a laced Wyandotte and a Lavender Araucana) as well as 2 RIR X NH chicks (6 and 8 weeks old).

So far everything has been fantastic and we're loving our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you have a nice little flock! Sorry about the birds you lost and had stolen, hopefully all will go smoothly with these!
You might like to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center And it is always fun to check out your area thread for chicken keeping neighbors https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/186559/australians-where-are-you-all and https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/598568/australia-six-states-and-that-funny-little-island

Welcome to BYC!

Oh MY! Stolen chickens!!! Sounds pretty scary for you and the hens. You have a very pretty flock!

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Kelsie has left you with the link to the learning center. Lots of great tips on keeping your birds happy and healthy.

Welcome to our flock!

Glad you joined us! Sorry to hear about your losses. Hopefully things will go well this time round!

I think you need a livestock guardian dog,. some guineas as an alarm system, and Emu's to run off four legged threats. There is a very popular Aussie thread on here "Australia- six states and one funny little Island," maybe you will find out if others are being robbed etc., and how they handled the situation. Did you report the incident to the police? Wish you continued success this third time around.
