(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yep, totally new to this! We will be getting our first flock of 6 in the spring of 2018

(3) What breeds do you have? Planning to get: 1 Silkie Bantam, 1 Brahma, 1 Ameraucana, 1 Australorp, 1 Orpington and 1 Rhode Island Red

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I am also a beekeeper but don't currently have a hive up and running.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am a stay at home mommy to three beautiful children all under 5. Our family is so excited to get started on this adventure of BYC keeping and can't wait to learn from the experts here!

Hello! So exciting that you and your kiddos are getting chickens! Our kids (6&3) LOVED having chickens. They were 1 & 4 when we first got chooks and our first two chickens were Production reds (red sex links) and I cannot recommend them enough!! They are gentle, friendly, egg laying machines! Nothing was more exciting for our kids than having a giant brown egg EVERY SINGLE MORNING. I swear she laid 350-360 eggs a year, stopping only to have their yearly molt. Our then 4yo named his chooks "Honey" and "Sexy" I can only imagine where he got those names!!! (i'm guessing my DH and his kitchen wooing!) Anyway I hope your chicken adventures are fabulous and good luck!

I envy you your patience; I remember when I decided that I wanted chickens, I wanted them yesterday!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
