New Member Introduction and Questions

Hi and welcome to BYC:frow We're so happy you've joined us:ya

Make sure you have a way to keep them in there! It only takes about 2 weeks for those wing feathers to come in and they start flying up on things. They will be flying out of the pool lol

LMAO we found that out the hard way. Went to bed one night, next morning we're chasing 8 little peepers through our garage. A piece of hardware cloth did the trick to keep their little peepin butts inside their brooder.

Yup, me too... Woke up to 20+ turkey's hangin out all over the garage.:barnie

I plan on starting with 6 Ameraucanas newly hatched. I have the "kiddie pool" brooder set up for the first weeks until they are ready to move to the coop.

Since you still have to build the coop you might have the chicks in the brooder a while. I would suggest making a little dome over the pool with wire and maybe place a stick across the top of the pool. That way they will be able to begin roosting and see out without leaving the brooder. I did this with mine as they were in my kitchen for about 2 months while I fixed up the coop for them. I am still making changes..... lol

Another thing would be to provide a small amount of greens they can peck at. I picked the seedy ends off of the grass, dandelion greens and flowers for them. And they had a "chick stick" treat block thing to peck at. I also took them outside pretty often and put them in a small temporary fenced area when it was nice out.
