Hello! My name is Kuiper! Pronounced like Kai-Per! I just made my account yesterday so I thought I would introduce myself a bit!

1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Currently, I have two chickens; a hen and a rooster. We got them last summer so they are still little babies to me.

I manly have ducks, though. The first pair of ducks I got were two Indian Runners named “Leo” and “Dexter” three years ago. After Dexter tragically passed away, I got two call Mallards; Fanny and Jim. Manly to give Leo company but that summer I also started hatching ducks! I ended up with a ton more mallards!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Two chickens! 14 ducks!

(3) What breeds do you have?

I’m not sure what breeds the chickens are yet - I have not done much research on them.

However, I have one Indian Runner (Leo) and many of her babies mixed with Swedish Blue. I have a few pure Swedish Blue ducks. And I have a few Swedish Blue mixed with Cayuga. Most everyone has a little Swedish Blue in them!

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I love how kind chickens are. I also enjoy the roosters crowing.

Ducks are awesome, they are also very interactive. I love to listen to them, watch them interact with each other, and swim.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I’m a college student so I don’t have many other hobbies other than school, work, and duck caring. However, I do like movies and I like to browse Netflix and other streaming services in my free time.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I live on a little “farm” in rural Kansas! We have three dogs; Lab Mix, Border Collie, and a Greyhound! Two cats, two horses and a donkey. Along with all our poultry.

My mom and I care for the ducks, mostly and we have been for two years! As I’m leaving the house soon, this was our last year of hatching ducks but it was very fun. I hope when I settle down in a house of my own, I can start hatching them again.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I’ve known about BYC for a while, it’s usually my go-to site when I have duck questions. I have finally joined because I need some help because during hatching this summer I got two special needs ducks. I have Fest with a fused join, and Rocket; who is (I think) partially blind. So far, this community has been so welcoming and so supportive! I’m happy to be here.

Thanks for reading!
