Hello,

My name is Tracy and I am a crazy chicken lady, I live in Wrexham which is in North Wales and I have owned chickens since September 16 when I took on an allotment which had a chicken run on it so thought what the hell lets do this. I took on 6 chickens from a "Free Range Farm" but they were so far from Free Range they may of well been on Mars, they lived in a big metal shed with a infra red lamp on them with a little concrete yard which was not as big as a football pitch which they were allowed onto once a day while their shed was cleared out. I refused to go into the shed because it would of been to upsetting so I made my dad go in and get 6 chickens out, they came out two by two and looked so scraggy it was pitiful. We then drove them to their new home much to the delight of the fellow allotmentiers who all stopped to chat and asked where they came from. The chickens are now safely installed although we lost two over Christmas and one is poorly at the moment although we are not sure if she is molting as she seems a little subdued.

Hi :welcome Tracy

Glad you could join us here! That's so nice of you to give those hens a new home when they needed it. If you get chance please do pop over to the UK thread and say hello ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/655508/uk-member-please-say-hi/0_30

Hens should not be molting at this time year, they usually molt in the autumn. Is she losing feathers? Any other symptoms? Have you checked for mites and lice? Is she eating and drinking ok? When did she last lay if laying?

If you post in our emergency section with as much detail as possible and pics are always helpful members should be able to help you with her ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Good luck with her enjoy your time here on BYC :frow

Hello Tracy.

Allotmentiers ...I had to look that word up. Sort of what we called
tenant farmers?

Always thought Wales to be a beautiful place. The ancient castles
and such. Even the famous pirate, Black Bart, was from Wales.

But welcome here, to the land of chickens.

You may also want to worm them. I'm sure care was very low grade for them at their former home. Thank you for rescuing them. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Hi and welcome to BYC - you have some great advice and links already so I'll just say hello!

All the best
CT

Spook - an allotment is just a tiny strip of land (whilst it varies, around 25ft*50ft). Local councils own a block of them, and peeps can rent them and grow / keep whatever they like on them. It simply provides an opportunity for people to grow a little of their own food.

Welcome!

Kudos to you for giving the girls a second chance at a good life. As you have already received links to some good starting points, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Hi All,

Thank you for your welcome messages, sad news on the poorly chicken front I went to check on then before work and she seemed a bit brighter, I then wen to check on her during my lunch break today and she was not eating her usual treat of tomatoes which she had eaten this morning, and she seem really bloated then I went back after work and she had gone and very thin almost as if she had a build up of gas this morning which had escaped tonight. Do any of you know of this and if there would be a remedy for it going forward.

Anyhow, long story short she has now been buried and I have cleaned the straw out of the nest box and disinfected it just in case there was any infection, my other chickens seem very happy and in their usual mischievous selves. But I will be keeping a very close eye on them.

Please do let me know if any of you know of bloat in chickens it would be very useful.

Thanks and speak soon.

Hi Spook,

Thanks for getting back to me, yes Wales is a very beautiful country, I am so very lucky to live here, if I travel 45 minutes I can either be in the stunning coastal town of West Wales or Snowdonia or the big cities of England for excellent shopping opportunities.

Thanks for the welcome message.

Hi,

Thanks for making me feel so welcome, it really is appreciated, especially as someone who until September last year was scared of anything that flapped at me due to my bother pushing me into my grandfathers chicken coop as a child while all his chickens were in there and slamming the door and scaring the birds and me half to death. I think being a member of such a group will be incredibly helpful to me.
