New Member: Match breed to each pullet?!

Do I have a pullet that is NOT an Ameraucana or Whiting True Blue or Whiting True Green?

  • One of your girls doesn't look like one of those 3 three breeds - but I don't know what it is!

Ok, that makes sense. I ordered 3 Whiting Blue, 3 Whiting Green and the balance were Ameraucana... so yes, all of them are tinted egg layers - some green, some blue, some olive. And it seems the mystery is no longer (among us)! Just a few, short, cold months until we know.

As for names, the only one that has a definite name is D. She was by far the smallest (almost died of coccidia) so my students called her "Nugget"
A&C are tentatively Pumpkin (Spice) and Chai (Latte).

Wait!? Are Whitings also easter eggers?
My definition of easter egger is any mixed breed that lays blue or green eggs or whose breeding mostly results in blue or green egg layers (hatchery EEs sometimes don't lay blue or green eggs, but are bred from the same stock). So, yes, whiting true blues and greens (and olive eggers, super blue egg layers, etc.) are easter eggers.

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us.

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Hi There!

I'm a relatively new chicken owner. My family started with day olds back in September (2018) and now have lovely pullets that seem to be happy in the backyard coop/run and well socialized with my family.

When it comes to the question of "which breeds do you have" the answer may be complicated. I ordered 3 different breeds of tinted egg layers - Easter Egger/Ameraucana, Whiting True Blue and Whiting True Green. So the answer is at least 3 different breeds. However, when asked if I wanted a "rare breed mystery chick" I caved and said yes! I lost a chick early on that may have been the rare breed, but I'm really not sure since there is some variety in how these breeds look.

So... I'm hopeful that some thoughtful veterans can match the chicken to the breed for me. Do all of my girls look like those three breeds to you? Simple feedback in the poll would be great! If you see a pullet that you can ID, please feel free to add a comment and specify chicken A, B, C, D, E, F or G! Please also specify what evidence you are using (comb, ear tufts, color, pattern, etc.).

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and to being a part of the backyard chicken community!

Truly,
Rae

To me, an Easter Egger is a mixed breed chicken that lays blue, green, olive or chocolate coloured eggs. Purebred Araucanas lay blue or green, Marans and Barnvelders lay chocolate, and I don't know what purebred lays olive.
