Hello, I’m Tabitha. My family and I are new to having backyard chickens. We started last summer so we’re about a year in. We live in North Carolina, USA.
We have 27 chickens. 9 Barred rock hens, 1 barred rock rooster; 10 black australorp hens, 1 black Australorp rooster, 1 golden laced Wyandotte bantam rooster (he was my surprise free chick, not originally planned but we love Nugget), 3 silver laced wyandotte hens, 2 speckled Sussex hens (the last 5 are juveniles still but should be laying in a month and a half).
We originally got chickens for the eggs. Also enjoy just watching them. And I enjoy giving them snacks and watching them go crazy.
I have a husband, 4 children (23 - 10 years old), 2 dogs, 3 cats. My sister is my neighbor but were close on same property and they have 4 children, another dog and cat. So we’re a big old happy homesteading family. We’re still working on getting the garden up and going. I also work full time as a nurse so it gets busy around here.
I’ve known about BYC for about a year and used the advise found here for sometime. Last year we lost a chicken to egg yolk peritonitis and was also egg bound. All of our treatments did not help her. That was rough. We also had lots of little issues and bumps along the way. I’ve been relying on BYC for information about chickens this whole time.
