Hello follow bird lovers! My husband and I have a small flock of about 30 birds all together. We raise chickens, ducks and turkeys right now!
Monday (today is Saturday) my 11 week old male mallard duck Maui started with seizures. It was 95 degrees Monday and that evening we noticed Maui flapping around and acting strange but everyone else was fine and I kinda just brushed it off. They have access to a pool 24/7 and have many waterers available in their run as well as shade. We should of brought Maui in that night but honestly I didn’t realize how seriously ill he was until the next day when I saw him actually seizure. We got him to the vet Tuesday and she did bloodwork and a parasite test, both came back PERFECT and no sign of hardware disease either. He had a temp if 108 at the vet and was open mouth breathing pretty heavily at this point so since Tuesday’s he has become a house duck. The vet gave us Baytril .25ml once daily for 7 days and Meloxicam .6ml every other day for 6 days. He’s still having seizures some are really bad and some only last a few seconds but my concern now is he has hardly eaten in days but is drinking and I think he is having some depression being away from his flock. I suggested phenobarbital to my vet and she said she has never used it in a duck before but would do some research to see if it was safe and find out a dose for him. I’m at a lose here. I don’t want him to suffer but I always want to try everything I can to save him. Here’s a picture of his lab results as well as a cute picture of Maui.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

I am so sorry about your duck! :hugs I know how hard it is to see them seize like this. I once had a Lovebird that had seizures a couple of times a week. Blood work, fecals, everything always came back normal. Then someone told me about using Apple Cider Vinegar in her water. I was skeptical but after drinking it for a few days, her seizures were reduced to once a month. A year before her death at 12 yrs of age, she stopped eating her pellet food and oddly enough her seizures stopped all together. So I don't know if it was a dietary thing or not.

You might post this issue in our Ducks forums, lots if helpful duck owners there... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/ducks.42/

And I am going to tag someone that knows his ducks. @Isaac 0

Good luck with your baby!

Welcome to BYC! I hope your duck does well. Have you tried any supplements? I don't have ducks but I keep nutri drench and Poultry Cell on hand for my chickens.
Heat stroke can cause seizures in people, so I assume it can in ducks, as well. Heat stroke is life altering, in that, high temperatures will always be dangerous to someone who has suffered from it.
I had a hen that suffered from a heat event last year. She had layed an egg and just fell out on the ground when she came out of the nest. I brought her in, put her on the shower floor tiles and placed cool wet towels under her wings and gave her a baby aspirin. I'm keeping a close eye on her and bringing her in when the Temps get high this year. I let her sleep in the coop and spend mornings and late evening with the rest of her flock.
Good luck with duck!
