Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

So sorry about your flock. :hugs Sometimes free ranging is not possible when you have lots of predators. A big sturdy covered run will keep them safe and protected, you can do supervised free ranging when you can be outside watching.

Welcome to our community!

Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear of your flock loss to hawks. Hoping you have better luck this time around. For their outings from the run, they must be supervised. If this is not possible, leave them confined.

We live in the city and just today I was out with our chickens while they were enjoying free time in the yard and here comes a hawk from nowhere screaming overhead through the yard about 12 feet above us. If I hadn't jumped up and ran, causing it to dart away, it probably would have attacked one of the girls who would not have had time to react (running to hide under a shrub). Hawks are fast and furious as you know. Folks living in the city vs. country tend to think less of predation, but it is a problem no matter where one lives.
Best of luck.

We had chickens a couple of years ago, unfortunately they all got taken by hawks. We live way out in the country in the open, so there’s no way to avoid them. So I joined BYC because I’ve found a lot of helpful advice here and I want to do it right this time.
Welcome. I live on six-acres in the middle of nowhere. I have hardware cloth walls and aprons, and in the run either hard-top or professional bird netting. I have had a hawk try a few times, but not succeed.
