Hello All!

I have been reading through as many threads as possible looking for any clue as to what my duck might be struggling with and I can't seem to find the answer.

Here are the details:

Name: Brand New (my 3 year old named him) :)
Breed: Ancona/Khaki Campbell Mix
Gender: Unknown
Age: 4 weeks
Feed: Unmedicated Starter Crumble
Water: Was doing plain water with Niacin (100mg/gallon) until "he" got sick, then put him on Save-a-chick
Bedding: Straw

Here's what's been happening:

We started with 3 little ducklings (hatched in our incubator). We lost one to unknown causes (no trauma) on Tuesday 5/26. We just found him dead in the brooder box. A week later, another duckling died. He had been to the vet a day earlier and was on Baytril for a sinus infection. The morning I found #2 dead (Friday 6/5), this guy was sitting all hunched down (see photo) in the brooder box. I initially thought he was depressed from losing 2 mates and brought him inside to be closer to us. I tried putting him in the bathtub with warm water and he just floated, perfectly still. He would not drink, move or even lower his head. Later that night, my husband found him belly up, in the crate, unable to right himself. He pulled the little guy out and spent nearly an hour coaxing him to eat and drink. He made it through the night and has continued to eat and drink from raised bowls and gobbles down any treats (worms, slugs, etc) handed to him. He still won't lower his head and is extremely unsteady on his feet. He'll wobble and topple over any time he tries to waddle. He swam a little better yesterday and today but still won't dip his head down. He seems to want to but then stops himself. I can't feel or see any obvious injuries and I can't imagine what could have happened in the brooder box.

Please give me any advice you can!! I am so sad to have lost two already. I don't want to lose this guy too! Thank you!

You say your husband "found" him belly up- does this mean the ducklings were being left to swim unsupervised, even for a short while? Ducklings cannot swim without oil from their mothers. They will drown. He may have water in his lungs.

I am not sure what can be done about this, hopefully someone more experienced will answer.

I'm sorry. Let me clarify. After he wouldn't swim, I dried him off and returned him to the crate we are keeping him in right now. He was found like that in the crate.

I defiantly agree with HeritageGoose13. Ducklings CANNOT be left unsupervised in water unless it's like a low pan or their waterer. I've had so many ducklings drown. Ironic, I know, but it's true. Ducklings only can float when they have their mother or once they're a good bit older. The moms give them special oils. And the mama has to be in the water with them. She can't be 3 feet away while babies are swimming.

Oh, didn't see this till after typing my above post. How does his poop look? Has he eaten or drunk anything? I had a mallard duckling a year ago. The drake killed its siblings, so the duckling was brought to live inside. It never seemed depressed so that probably isn't your problem.

Do you have a vet that will see your duckling? if you just found #2 dead on Friday I'd say this lil one needs to see a vet asap.

Very sorry for your losses.

Question could 3 yr old have put anything into crate and duckling have eaten it?

Poop is a bit difficult to describe so I've attached a photo. :)

I would take him to the vet but the specialist is rather expensive. We unfortunately can't afford to put a lot of money into treatment.

As far as him eating something funny from my 3 year old. He didn't put anything in the brooder but I can't guarantee BN didn't find something out in the yard earlier that day.
