Howdy! Not particularly new to chickens but, boy, did we have a spooky moment last Friday!

My wife and I like to sit out and visit with the chickens late afternoon when things begin to cool. So Friday we are sitting with them and some of the neighborhood birds screeched and split. About the same time, rather than typical chicken/predator behavior we have seen (squawking, etc.) they every stinking one of them, a dozen, froze in place at the same moment. They did not move a muscle! They began a quiet sort of cooing or trill sound without moving. This continued for over a full minute.

We are in E. TN. If I were in Cali I would be wondering about a quake. There was no sound my wife or I could discern whatsoever. Honestly, I was waiting for the mother ship to come down and giant chickens to step off! :wee:D

Then they abruptly, again synchronized, just went back to their snacking and normal behavior.

Guesses?

Hi and welcome to BYC. They for sure saw or heard something beyond our mortal capacity, I’d say  Chat with other BYC members nearby using the links in my signature, below (turn your phone to landscape to see them).

Make yourself at home and enjoy the forums.

Best wishes

Welcome to BYC.

Hawk or shadow of another bird “Fly by.” My chickens do the same thing!
Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Something spooked the wild birds and the same something spooked your birds. They didn't know if it was land or air based so they froze.

I agree with the above posters. In my experience such a reaction has generally been to an aerial predator.
