New Member with Strange Chickens

Welcome to Backyard Chickens this is great place, I will ask do you have hardware cloth on the coop ?
Thanks!
At the time more than half were out and within about 8 feet of us as we sat in chair. I have a polyurethane shed I turned into a coop. I cut a small door in the back that every morning we open into a tunnel. The tunnel runs to our abandoned trampoline which I encircled in chicken wire. They run back and forth all day, typically enclosed in that manner, except when we let them roam around us early evenings. Even the ones under the shade of the trampoline instantly froze at the same time and they began cooing.

Howdy! Not particularly new to chickens but, boy, did we have a spooky moment last Friday!

My wife and I like to sit out and visit with the chickens late afternoon when things begin to cool. So Friday we are sitting with them and some of the neighborhood birds screeched and split. About the same time, rather than typical chicken/predator behavior we have seen (squawking, etc.) they every stinking one of them, a dozen, froze in place at the same moment. They did not move a muscle! They began a quiet sort of cooing or trill sound without moving. This continued for over a full minute.

We are in E. TN. If I were in Cali I would be wondering about a quake. There was no sound my wife or I could discern whatsoever. Honestly, I was waiting for the mother ship to come down and giant chickens to step off! :wee:D

Then they abruptly, again synchronized, just went back to their snacking and normal behavior.

Guesses?

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people! You might try looking for 'chicken sounds' on YouTube, which will show you various "predator type" warnings that chickens can make. Other than that, I imagine you have Stepford chickens. I'd lock your doors and windows at night, and shove something against the fireplace if you have one! Good luck!
