(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I got my first twelve chicks February 2014. I lost two last summer. Added fourteen chicks April 2015.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 24

(3) What breeds do you have? White Leghorns (4); Rhode Island Red (1); Silver Laced Wyandote (2); Black Astrralorp (1); Buff Orphington (2), these are all 17 months old and good layers. Ameracuana (6); Black Sex Link (6); Buff Orphington (2), these are all Pullets about 19 weeks old. I got my first two pullet eggs, one tan, and one greenish-blue.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I found this website last year when I got my first set of chicks.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Scrapbooking, card making, photography, sightseeing.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I am permanently disabled due to an incurable illness. My husband and I have been married for 39 years, this past January 2015. He will retire this September. We have a married daughter with four girls. We had a son who was killed by a drunk driver, he left behind one girl and two boys. His ex-wife and widow both remarried and each had another child that we claim as our grandchildren. So we are blessed with nine total. Six girls and three boys. They are the joy of our lives. We have a small farm in Northern California. We have one American Paint horse, four Alpine Goats, three cats, and one dog, who is my buddy, her name is Abby.

I immensely enjoy the antics of the chickens. Our Pullets are just starting to lay and what a surprise to see a blue egg in the nesting area. This is way too much fun. My friends and family are enjoying the benefits of my chickens also.

Wow that is quite a story What a strong woman you must be and to handle all of that I am in awe.
Congrats on your Anniversary! And for DH being home with you soon

I for one cant wait to see some of your photo's!

An Americauna (easter egger) no doubt left you the blue-ish egg. You picked some fine breeds for your flock. Wish you the very best outcome with your personal life and your farm.

You may want to post on your state thread to see if you have any chicken folks in your area. Computers are nice but, have their limits. Good to have friends you can actually see and interact with.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction. :o) I'm sorry about the loss of your two chicks. It's always sad to lose some of our flock. My wife and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary this past June. You have a nice mix of breeds and hybrids. Black Sex Links are my favorites as they are very friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per year. You should get loads of large, brown eggs from those six girls. :o) Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
