Hi, My name is Sally and I live in Barnstaple Devon UK. I have been keeping ex battery hens for 9 years. Unfortunately these poor girls are quite worn out when I get them aged 18 months so they are prone to illness. have lost 3 recently and am now down to 2 girls one of which is very poorly. My vet suspects Mareks but is not sure. I have been using the Forum to try and get ideas of what I can try to help her.

Howdy! Sorry you are having a tough time with your hen. I'm surprised your vet has not done more testing such a fecals and blood tests. However, you can make sure your girls are on a good diet to help them adjust. Sounds like they have found a good home.

Blood test would be £70 alone without anything else. Much as I love my hens there is a limit to how much I can spend on them. Unfortunately in my area there are not a lot of vets that specialise in chickens.

Welcome aboard! :frow
We are glad you joined our flock.

Not many avian vets in this country either, the regular vets usually don't know what to do with them.

There really is no treatment for Marek's that I am aware of. Survivors will be carriers for life. Vaccination of baby chicks will not prevent the virus but, may bring lighter effects.
