Hi Everyone,

I am new to this site. I am getting ready to order 20 baby Buff Orpington chicks this week, we have been raising hens for 3 years now, but this is our first time with chicks. The first 15 hens and 3 roosters were already 3 months old when we got them. They are RIR and getting very few eggs now.
My question is what is the best bedding to put in the new chick house for the baby chicks, we live in Newberry, FL so it is very warm. I have to admit even though I have always had hens and roosters even through my childhood up to my adult hood now, still the age of 60, I have never had the chance to be a baby chick mama, so I am not sure what is best for the babies. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi and welcome to BYC from middle Tennessee :welcome I use pine shavings in my brooder along with nipple waterers and a sweeter heater. QC supply sells the best waterer I've found to date. I also add a piece of news paper with some sand, baby grit, and feed for them to discover. Here's a shot of my brooder.

Welcome to the BYC community. You may want to join your state thread, just put "Florida," in the search box and it should come up. That would be the best place to inquire about raising chicks, what breeds do best and what type of coop etc. will get them through the hot weather.

I LOVE that you're gonna be a "momma"! It is so much fun! Plus you get the joy of handling them and watching their antics. I love the hens raising the chicks because they seem to learn very quickly, but I have enjoyed raising chicks even though its a bit of work, lol. Welcome to the BYC family, so happy you are here! :wee
