Hello all and greetings from Bendigo (Australia). I am 75% of the way through building a new chicken house using recycled and reused materials. The build is on hold at the moment as I have a work related injury (Registered Nurse). For various reasons I haven't had chickens for a few years so I am really excited about finishing their accommodation and getting my new flock (3).
Looking forward to sharing in the collective experience and wisdom on this forum so that I can make sure my girls will be happy and comfortable.

Hi Debby, thanks for the welcome. I have usually had ISA Browns as they are good layers and pretty easy to look after. The other benefit is that I can get them from an egg farm and give them a much better life here, and let them be chickens. I am taking my time with the house as I want to be sure it is going to be fox and feral cat proof. Don't think I will be able to keep the snakes out but fortunately I don't see many here.

Hi Peter :frow welcome to BYC!! We also built our coop from recycled materials :highfive: it has held up wonderfully. Currently i have a flock of 4. 2 of which are isa's. Glad to have ya:D for the snakes we buried our hardware cloth 1ft down and did a skirt 1 ft around the coop and covered the skirt with gravel we found on the property. Zero predator issues ever.

If you haven't yet, please make your chickens a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise.
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it! :D

Thanks Stayc for the welcome and the advice. I was lucky, had a new roof put on my house (human house) a couple of years back and I kept a heap of the old roofing iron that has become the wall cladding for the chook house. Also used the left over insulation for the ceiling and front wall as it gets pretty hot here in the summer.

Awesome!! We used the wood from our front porch to build most of the coop. The roof we bought tho, and the hardware cloth. We did the insulation inside with stuff from the house we upgraded. Overall i can't complain. Hardware cloth is pricey but its worth the security.
